How to get the best speed of Traxxas Rustler 4x4 VXL

Want to take your Rustler VXL to next level speed? Here’s how to do it! +

For this modification, you will need a few tools.

  • 4000 mAh 3-cell LiPo battery
  1. Remove the old motor and electronic speed control. - Unplug the two wires connecting the motor to the ESC before opening the waterproof receiver box.

Remove the plug from channel 2 of the receiver, and pull the wire through the box opening. Once you have disconnected your XL-5, unscrew it from the mounting plate.

  1. Install the new ESC - Remove the old ESC and replace it with the new one from the kit. Then secure the new VXL-3s ESC to the mounting plate
  2. Connect the new ESC - Run the new wire from the VXL-3s into the receiver box and plug it into channel 2 of the receiver, then reseal the receiver box.
  3. Remove the original motor - Start by removing the right tire to unscrew and remove the transmission cover. Next, unscrew the original spur gear by removing the three screws holding it onto the slipper clutch.

Unscrew the two chromed screws that hold the motor to the transmission case and pull it out.

  1. Install your new brushless motor - First, install the fixed gear adapter marked “A B.”  These spacers make setting the gear mesh super simple, and will also help keep the motor in place. Use the hole marked "A,"  and tighten the motor down, and then install the new spur gear.
  2. Reassemble - Install the new pinion gear onto the motor shaft, and ensure the set screw has a small amount of blue thread locker on it to prevent loosening. Reinstall the transmission cover and reattach the rear wheel.

Your brushless motors now have three wires as opposed to two. The wires are color coded to make installation easy, and to help you correctly plug the tires.

  1. Complete setup - Install your battery, turn on your remote control, and then turn on the new Velineon VXL-3s. Use the low-voltage detection feature with a LiPo battery to avoid damage to the battery.

If the light on the ESC is red, press and hold the button for approximately 10 seconds or until you hear a tone and the light turns green.

Your new speed monster, Rustler, is now ready to go!
